Monster Mash Quilt Along: Block 4 “Jack O’ Lantern”
Hey, boo. It’s time for Block 4 of the Monster Mash Quilt Along. (If you’re new here, visit my intro to Monster Mash blog post HERE.) In short, we are sewing up a frightfully fun Halloween sampler quilt using some of the most popular blocks from my Hey Boo collection. Feel free to join in any time, even on your own timeline.
Block 4: “Jack O’ Lantern”
For August, Block 4 is a cheery little pumpkin with a winky face. Trick-or-treat yo’self with a block straight outta the pastel Halloween patch…
The Fabric
Fabric is Hey Boo by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics – except for a few coordinating Moda Bella solids. (For this Jack O’ Lantern block, I mixed in 9900 147 “Coral,” 9900 69 “Fig Tree Green,” and 9900 284 “Charcoal.”.) Sidebar – if you are looking for a Monster Mash kit, check with your favorite local or online quilt shop while it’s still in stock. You can access the full materials list for Monster Mash here if you need it. Of course, you can use what you have in your stash and create your own spunky color combination.
Finished block: 16″ x 16″
To make the “Jack O’ Lantern” quilt block, here’s the info about the specific fabric SKUs shown:
- (1) fat quarter pumpkin print (Bella solid #9900 147 “Coral”)
- (1) fat eighth charcoal print (Bella solid #9900 284 “Charcoal”)
- (1) scrap 7″ x 7″ leaf print #1 (Bella solid #9900 69 “Fig Tree Green”)
- (1) square 5″ x 5″ leaf print #2 (Hey Boo SKU #5213 16)
- (1) fat quarter background print (Hey Boo SKU #5215 13)
The Pattern
There are a couple ways to access the Block 4 “Jack O’ Lantern“ pattern instructions. (If you have a kit, check to see if the pattern is already included.)
- OPTION 1: is via the “LB233 “Tricks & Treats” quilt pattern. I sell the pattern in printed booklet or PDF formats in my shop here. (You can also opt to buy the Hey Boo pattern bundle to get all 4 of the quilt patterns used for the blocks in the shop here.)
- OPTION 2: is the “Jack O’ Lantern” single block PDF download available on my site:
Cutting Hints
IF USING THE “TRICKS & TREATS” PILLOW PATTERN, jump to page 3 of your instructions for a quick cutting list of what you need for a single block. Once cutting is complete, follow Steps #2-18 to construct your pumpkin block.
IF USING THE “JACK O’ LANTERN” SINGLE BLOCK DOWNLOAD: No special notes, just follow the pattern instructions.
Piecing Tips
As with the other blocks, pay attention to the unfinished measurements listed in each step. This is important to check when working with small pieces (i.e. the little sawtooth star, the toothy smile, etc.). And there are quite a few little pieces in this one! If you find your units not measuring correctly in any step along the way, check your seam allowance accuracy first. (I wouldn’t recommend sewing with a scant 1/4″ if any of you do that.) As always, you are welcome to leave questions in the comments!
The Prize
Just a little reminder that Kaitlyn @ Knot and Thread is a sponsor of this quilt along. She’s offering a 20% discount on longarm quilting on all Monster Mash quilts. (They must be submitted to her within 3 months of the quilt along ending – which means the deadline for the discount is February 2025.)
For August, I’m giving away a boxed kit of the “Pushing Up Daisies” quilt! This includes everything you need to make the quilt-top plus binding fabric. To enter, just be sure to post a picture of your progress of Block 4 “Jack O’ Lantern” on social media with the hashtag #MonsterMashQuiltAlong. I’ll announce a winner before the next block release on 9.4.24!
