Monster Mash Quilt Along: Block 3 “Frankenstein”

Are you ready for it? Block 3 of the Monster Mash Quilt Along is here! If you’re new here, visit my intro to Monster Mash blog post HERE. In a nutshell, we are sewing up a frightfully fun Halloween sampler quilt using some of the most popular blocks from my Hey Boo collection.

Block 3: “Frankenstein”

Block 3 is the monstrously cute “Frankenstein” quilt block. Bring him to life one stitch at a time! He is my favorite of the bunch.

The Fabric

Fabric is Hey Boo by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics – except for a few coordinating Moda Bella solids. (For this Frankenstein block, I used 9900 284 “Charcoal,” 9900 69 “Fig Tree Green” for the face, and 9900 308 “Pickle” for the nose.) If you are looking for a Monster Mash kit, check with your favorite local or online quilt shop while it’s still in stock. You can access the full materials list for Monster Mash here if you need it.

Finished block: 16″ x 16″

To make the “Frankenstein” quilt block, here’s what you’ll need:

  • (1) fat quarter green face print (9900 69 “Fig Tree Green”)
  • (1) scrap 6″ x 6″ nose print (9900 308 “Pickle”)
  • (1) scrap 8″ x 8″ ear print (SKU 5210 17)
  • (1) square 8″ x 8″ cheek print (SKU 5213 14)
  • (1) fat quarter background print (SKU 5215 12)
  • (1) fat eighth charcoal print (9900 284 “Charcoal”)

The Pattern

There are a couple ways to access the Block 3 “Frankenstein” pattern instructions. (If you have a kit, check to see if the pattern is already included.)

  • OPTION 1: is via the LB232 “Frank” quilt pattern. I sell the pattern in printed booklet or PDF formats in my shop here. (You can also opt to buy the Hey Boo pattern bundle to get all 4 of the quilt patterns used for the blocks in the shop here.) The finished block is slightly bigger but super easy to adapt. More on that in a sec.

Cutting Hints

IF USING THE “FRANK” PILLOW PATTERN, the only tweak is to the size of the Q and R rectangles of background fabric. (This is to decrease the finished block size slightly since we’re not making it into a pillow.) Cut (2) Q rectangles 2-1/8″ x 16-1/2″ and (2) R rectangles 2-1/2″ x 13-1/4″. Upon piecing the block in Step #16, the unfinished block size should now measure 16-1/2″ x 16-1/2″. (If somehow you miss this note until after the fact, it would be easy to trim the block down afterwards.)

IF USING THE “FRANKENSTEIN” SINGLE BLOCK DOWNLOAD: no special notes, just follow the pattern instructions.

Piecing Tips

As with the other blocks, pay attention to the unfinished measurements listed in each step. This is important to check when working with small pieces (i.e. the scar, etc.). If you find your units not measuring correctly in any given step, check your seam allowance accuracy. (I wouldn’t recommend sewing with a scant 1/4″ if any of you do that.)

The nice thing about this Frankenstein monster block, is it is made of simply squares and rectangles. If there is a tricky element in this one, it would be the scar unit. There are a lot of little pieces in rows, so this is where a slight seam allowance discrepancy would add up.

The Prize

Just a little reminder that Kaitlyn @ Knot and Thread is a sponsor of this quilt along. She’s offering a 20% discount on longarm quilting on all Monster Mash quilts. (They must be submitted to her within 3 months of the quilt along ending – which means the deadline for the discount is February 2025.)

For July, I’m thinking a Christmas-in-July theme for the prize. And let’s make it double the winners this month – each winner will get (1) Layer Cake and (1) Jelly Roll of Christmas Eve fabric! To enter, just be sure to post a picture of your progress of Block 3 “Frankenstein” on social media with the hashtag #MonsterMashQuiltAlong. I’ll announce a winner before the next block release on 8.7.24!
