Monster Mash Quilt Along: Block 6 “Friendly Ghost”
Surprise, surprise! Due to popular request, I’m releasing Block 6 early. Turns out there are a few of you chomping at the bit to get this done before Halloween! I hear you and I get it. Block 6 of the Monster Mash Quilt Along is the “Friendly Ghost” block. (If you’re new here, you’ll want to visit my intro to Monster Mash blog post HERE.) To sum it up, we are sewing up a frightfully fun Halloween sampler quilt using some of the most popular blocks from my Hey Boo collection. Feel free to join in any time on your own timeline. There are no rules here.
I’ve also released the Monster Mash Finishing instructions HERE.
Block 6: “Friendly Ghost”
Block 6 “Friendly Ghost” is a total sweetheart and the perfect way to wrap up the collection of blocks.
The Fabric
Fabric for this Monster Mash quilt is Hey Boo by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics – except for a few coordinating Moda Bella solids. (For this “Friendly Ghost” block, I used 9900 335 “Princess” for the cheeks and 9900 284 “Charcoal” for the eyes/mouth. If you are looking for a Monster Mash kit, check with your favorite local or online quilt shop while it’s still in stock. You can access the full materials list for Monster Mash here if you need it. Of course, you can use what you have in your stash and create your own spunky color combination.
Finished block: 16″ x 16″
To make the “Friendly Ghost” quilt block, here’s the info about the specific fabric SKUs shown:
- (1) fat quarter background print (Hey Boo SKU #5213 17)
- (1) scrap 5″ x 5″ cheek print (Moda Bella #9900 335 “Princess”)
- (1) fat quarter white print (Hey Boo SKU #5215 21)
- (1) scrap 5″ x 5″ charcoal print (Moda Bella #9900 284 “Charcoal”)
The Pattern
There are a couple ways to access the Block 6 “Friendy Ghost” pattern instructions. (If you have a kit, check to see if the pattern is already included.)
- OPTION 1: is via the “LB230 “Ghost Town” quilt pattern (also contains the Haunted House block pattern). I sell the pattern in printed booklet or PDF formats in my shop here. (You can also opt to buy the Hey Boo pattern bundle to get all 4 of the quilt patterns used for the blocks in the shop here.)
- OPTION 2: is the “Friendly Ghost” single block PDF download available on my site:
Cutting Hints
IF USING THE “GHOST TOWN” PATTERN, jump to page 6/Step #12 of your instructions for a quick cutting list of what is needed for a single block. Follow Steps #13-24 to piece the block.
IF USING THE “FRIENDLY GHOST” SINGLE BLOCK DOWNLOAD: No special notes, just follow the pattern instructions.
Piecing Tips
As with the other blocks, pay attention to the unfinished measurements listed in each step. You will probably be a pro by now having pieced the other blocks! I hope you’ve seen some personal growth here.
The Prize
Just a little reminder that Kaitlyn @ Knot and Thread is a sponsor of this quilt along. She’s offering a 20% discount on longarm quilting on all Monster Mash quilts. (They must be submitted to her within 3 months of the quilt along ending – which means the deadline for the discount is February 2025.)
For September, I’m giving away a fat quarter bundle of Hey Boo fabric. To enter, just be sure to post a picture of your progress on social media with the hashtag #MonsterMashQuiltAlong. I’ll announce the winner in October.
