It’s September, and everything’s coming up haunted daisies! Block 5 of the Monster Mash Quilt Along is blooming and couldn’t be more frightfully cute. If you’re new here, you’ll want to visit my intro to Monster Mash blog post HERE. In short, we are sewing up a frightfully fun Halloween sampler quilt using some of the most popular blocks from my Hey Boo collection. Feel free to join in any time on your own timeline. There are no rules here.

Hard to believe we are almost ready to wrap up this quilt along! Looking ahead – I’ll release the free finishing instructions in a couple weeks (9.18.24) to give you a head start before the final block release on 10.2.24. I know some of you have been working ahead, and that’s ok too!

Block 5: “Haunted Daisy”

For September, Block 5 is a sweet daisy block with only a slightly spooky vibe… you know I can’t resist a good flower block and a Halloween quilt along is no exception.

The Fabric

Fabric for this Monster Mash quilt is Hey Boo by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics – except for a few coordinating Moda Bella solids. (For this “Haunted Daisy” block, I used 9900 62 “Rose” for the background. If you are looking for a Monster Mash kit, check with your favorite local or online quilt shop while it’s still in stock. You can access the full materials list for Monster Mash here if you need it. Of course, you can use what you have in your stash and create your own spunky color combination.

Finished block: 16″ x 16″

To make the “Haunted Daisy” quilt block, here’s the info about the specific fabric SKUs shown:

• (1) fat quarter flower petal print (Hey Boo SKU #5215 21)
• (1) fat eighth charcoal leaf-and-stem print (Hey Boo SKU #5212 16)
• (1) square 7″ x 7″ flower center print (Hey Boo SKU #5213 12)
• 3/8 yard background print (Moda Bella #9900 62 “Rose”)

The Pattern

There are a couple ways to access the Block 5 “Haunted Daisy” pattern instructions. (If you have a kit, check to see if the pattern is already included.)

• OPTION 1: is via the “LB231 “Pushing Up Daisies” quilt pattern (also contains the skull pattern). I sell the pattern in printed booklet or PDF formats in my shop here. (You can also opt to buy the Hey Boo pattern bundle to get all 4 of the quilt patterns used for the blocks in the shop here.)

Cutting Hints

IF USING THE “PUSHING UP DAISIES” PATTERN, jump to page 3/Step #1 of your instructions for a quick cutting list of what is needed for a single block. I didn’t use a unidirectional print for my flower petals in my block for this sampler – but if you do, be sure to cut the (8) B rectangles so (4) are cut horizontally and (4) are cut vertically. However, I did use a unidirectional print for the leaf/stem unit here, and if you do too – be sure that the C rectangle is cut vertically, and the D rectangles horizontally. Follow Steps #2-13 to piece the block.

IF USING THE “HAUNTED DAISY” SINGLE BLOCK DOWNLOAD: No special notes, just follow the pattern instructions.

Piecing Tips

As with the other blocks, pay attention to the unfinished measurements listed in each step. The biggest tip with this block is to pay attention to the direction of the unidirectional prints as you piece everything. (Laying everything out ahead of time is helpful.)
