$5 in January 2023: Open Heart Patterns
Love is in the air. Grab some fat quarters or fat eighths and get ready to stitch up some love in 2023 with the newest $5 pattern of the month: the Open Heart quilt. (As an added bonus, I’ve also added the mini Open Heart Pin Cushion pattern to the sale as well!)
Open Heart: The Originals
The Open Heart quilt is made with fat eighths or fat quarters and was created for the Olive’s Flower Market collection circa 2016. I would consider it advanced beginner skill level (a combination of beginner half square triangle + easy corner triangle techniques). I get a lot of questions regarding whether this block can be made with a Jelly Roll… unfortunately, no. The bottom ‘V’ shape of the heart is made from a square. There would be no way to piece it with a Jelly Roll Strip unless it was constructed in a completely different way i.e. requiring templates.
My favorite version of the Open Heart quilt has Moda Crossweave in “Charcoal” for the background. (Please note that Crossweave tends to shrink a lot more than regular quilting cottons when washed… I always recommend purchasing extra yardage to prewash/preshrink it before cutting.)
We get a completely different look using a white background (Moda Bella 9900 98) and pale pink border. One thing I love about this quilt is that it is truly versatile and looks good in any collection you want to make it in.
Open Heart in Country Rose Fabric
I wanted to showcase 4 different ways to make Open Heart in Country Rose fabric currently in shops. The collection has a large variety of colors, so it’s fun to see how many different looks you can get from just one collection. The mockups on the top row carry a light, springtime vibe. The bottom 2 mockups play to a more sophisticated look by leaning into the charcoals, taupes, pinks, and greens. I wanted to show that you can get a look very similar to the originals in Olive’s Flower Market. Which one would you make?
