Dessert Roll Quilts Fat Eighth quilts Magic Dot Fabric

Glam Squad Tile Quilt in Magic Dot Fabric

Talk about a glow up. These patchwork shapes have come together to create some serious dazzle – and just look at that shine! With pinwheels, quarter-square triangles, snowballs, and flying geese, these blocks overlap in a dynamic design that will have you beaming with pride when your masterpiece is complete.

The Fabric

This is “Glam Squad,” an overlapping tile quilt that can be made with a Moda dessert roll (precut strips 5″ x 40″) or fat eighths (see the full materials list here). I made this version using a dessert roll of my new Magic Dot collection (using a few fat eighths to replace dessert roll prints that blended too closely with the background). I just love the illusion of the overlapping blocks, it’s such a stunner!

SIDEBAR – I fully intended on using the “Americana” Magic Dot print as the background (SKU #5230 37). However, I needed to get a jumpstart on the quilt before yardage arrived… so I used the white-on-white Magic Dot I had on hand. (You will notice this difference looking at the mockup vs actual quilt made.) Both are great options, but I would have really loved to add a little extra zing with the colorful dots!

The Layout

Sometimes you want a quick and easy quilt – and other times, you want to make something a little more epic. The “Glam Squad” quilt is the latter and has moved to my #1 favorite quilt spot. (Can’t wait to show you the tester version I made as well.)

Here’s a mockup of the Glam Squad quilt (note the “Americana” Magic Dot for the background). I would categorize Glam Squad as “advanced” though I think that might give the impression it’s harder than it is? It uses a combination of beginner techniques (flying geese, half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, etc.) and has lots of pieces to keep track of. To give the layout the illusion of overlapping blocks, we make the main components of the blocks – then arrange the whole quilt top at once. From there, everything is sewn into rows, then rows together.

I am excited about this new pattern. I love Glam Squad it looks great your new Magic Dot fabric. It looks like a bit of a challenge. I’ll be looking for Magic Dot later this year. Will it be offered in a dessert roll? I have never used one, but I think it would be a great precut to use.

Yes, the Magic Dot collection will have my first ever Dessert Roll in it. I decided I’d better design a pattern using one! :))) Thanks for the love!

I’ve never heard of a dessert roll, love the concept. I’m in love with your magic dots Fabric and this new pattern is perfect for your fabric. It does look difficult, I’m not “advanced” yet but hope to get there in time. Thanks for the inspiration.
