Persnickety Herringbone Quilt in Magic Dot Fabric
What’s more classic than a herringbone design? One inspired by vintage knitting designs, of course! Go big and bold with the scrappy Layer Cake version – or keep it simple and sweet with a few pops of color using charm packs and an accent print. The choice is yours with this patchwork delight.
Magic Dot Fabric
Persnickety can be made using a couple different precuts depending on the look you want. Of course, this quilt was designed for my upcoming Magic Dot collection that is on order for shops now and will arrive October 2024. This post will focus on the scrappy, colorful Layer Cake (precut 10″ square) version! In addition to the Layer Cake, you pick an accent fabric. (I opted for the “Midnight” navy Magic Dot color – seen inside of the white blocks.)
If desired, you can substitute (1) fat eighth for any (1) undesired Layer Cake print. Because there are several white prints in the Magic Dot collection, I ended up substituting (4) fat eighths as shown in the mockup below – a light blue “Cotton Candy,” navy blue “Midnight,” light pink “Pink Lemonade,” and medium pink “Raspberry.” (You can see them in the half-square triangles at the top and bottom of the layout.)
The other version of Persnickety is sort of the reverse. Instead of a Layer Cake, you pick your favorite color as yardage and use (2) charm packs in place of the navy accent. I’ll share more about that version when it’s back from the quilter!
Pattern Tidbits
I would consider Persnickety a beginner skill level quilt. (The technique includes making 4-patches and half-square triangles.) This one has so many possibilities since it is simple and would look great in any fabric collection.
