Modern Herringbone Quilt in Old Glory Fabric

Who can resist a pretty little rollup of fabric strips? Moda Fabrics calls these precious precuts “Honeybuns,” and each one includes 42 strips 1.5″ x WOF. (They’re different than Jelly Rolls, which are the 2.5″ strip version.) Fun fact – not all Moda collections include Honeybuns in the precut lineup. Honeybuns are added by designer request. With the Old Glory collection, I just knew we would need these so you can plan on those being available when the collection arrives to shops Feb 2024.

They are an option to use for the stripes in the “Miss Americana” flag quilt, but I also imagine them looking fabulous in a patriotic versino of the “Modern Herringbone” quilt.

Pattern Tidbits

“Modern Herringbone” is made with a combination of fat quarters and a Honeybun. The quilt was originally designed as part of the Bloomington fabric collection from a years back. Because Modern Herringbone is made of parallelogram shapes (a paper template is included to help you cut them), it requires the same piecing technique you would use for piecing triangles or diamonds. Trust me, it’s much easier (and more fun) than it might sound. In fact, I’ve created a little video w/ a few pointers on my Instagram @lellaboutique under the “Mod Herringbone” story highlight.

    Dear Vanessa:
What a lovely, different version of a herringbone block! The 1-1/2″ strips give it an airy look; much less compact like a regular herringbone. I can definitely see this as a Quilt of Valor!
    Regards,
    Jane
