Moda Blockheads 4 (Block 18)
Hello everybody! Hope your summer is going great! It’s unbearable hot where I live so I’m hiding out indoors at the sewing machine and praying for October to get here sooner than later. It’s Wednesday – which means it’s new block day for Moda Blockheads 4 free block of the week. Block 18 is “Crowning Glory” by Betsy Chutchian. Be sure to go visit her blog for the free block pattern + inspiration, tips, and tricks.
Block 18 “Crowning Glory”
Okay now, this block is totally adorable! It reminds me a little of a wreath so I made this first block into a little spring wreath. (How cute would it be in Christmas prints?!) Block 18 uses a combination of intermediate methods like piecing triangles + quarter-square triangles (QSTs). Making QSTs is basically like making half-square triangles (HSTs) but doing the steps twice. I added an extra 1/4″ to the C/D square measurements so I could trim them down twice (once as a HST, and the second time as a QST).
Fabric
This first block is made in Love Note fabric. One of my favorite prints for this quilt along has been the “First Crush Tile” print seen fussy-cut in the corners. It was a sweet addition in this one.
The second set is made in Flower Pot fabric. I wanted to show a couple other ways to play around with fabric placement to create different shapes and looks. Because these are the 4.5″ finished size, I find it best to use more near-solid prints. I jumped at the opportunity to pick bigger scale prints for the center squares here.
