Achy Breaky Quilt in True Love Fabric
This one’s for the hearts that have been through it and still keep on beating. “Achy Breaky” is big on contrast, a little moody (in the best way!), and guaranteed to turn heads with its bold, graphic heart blocks. Grab a few treasured fat quarters and let this design sweep you off your feet.
Pattern Tidbits
This “Achy Breaky” geometric heart quilt that is as fun to make as it is to drool over. The design splits the background into two colors – new navy and cream SKUs of Magic Dot – to get this spunky, off-kilter look. It’s fat quarter friendly and feature True Love fabric that is set to arrive to shops May 2026.
Overall, this pattern is considered advanced beginner skill level. To assemble each half-heart unit, we use a beginner easy corner triangle technique. (I’m including a diagram below to illustrate.) We start out by marking a diagonal line on the (wrong side of) F/E background squares before bringing them right sides together with an A rectangle, orienting diagonal lines as shown. (This is obviously just the “left” side of a whole-heart unit.) The process is to stitch along the diagonal lines, trim the excess 1/4″ away from seam, and press the corners out, like so…

Now here’s where the fun tip comes in. As you trim the excess from the E squares at the bottom of each unit, you can toss the trimmings – or stitch them together to make bonus half-square triangles (HSTs). (You could also do this with the F trimmings but they are a lot smaller so I skipped saving them.) From the E trimmings, however, I made a total of (108) scrappy HSTs.

Scrappy Backing Detail
From there, I stitched the HSTs into (4) rows of (27) before piecing them into my backing. Here’s a little peek of how that quilted backing turned out! I decided to add a lighter print above the HST section and a darker print below – but of course you could use a single print if you like. I just love that the scrappy backing makes a fun secondary quilt.
