Barn Style Fat Quarter Quilt
A new $5 pattern of the month is here… say hello to Barn Style! Barn Style is a simple star block made with 9 fat quarters.
Barn Style is one of my favorite patterns from the Farmer’s Daughter collection for Moda Fabrics circa 2017. I used Moda Crossweave in “Charcoal” for the background to add awesome texture and make the colors pop. (NOTE: If you decide to use Moda Crossweave in your quilting, be aware that it shrinks more than regular cotton prints. Because of this, I recommend buying extra yardage to prewash/dry before cutting.) Custom quilting by Natalia Bonner.
Like I said in the beginning, Barn Style is a fat quarter quilt pattern and great for all skill levels. The pattern is available as a PDF or printed booklet. It finishes at 68″ x 68″ with 9 blocks set 3×3 (+ a 4 1/2″ border).
It’s perfect as a lap size–but perhaps you’d like to make it bigger for a bed–or smaller for a baby quilt. No problem! Read on…
For a baby quilt 48″ x 48″: Make (4) Barn Style blocks and set them 2×2. Keep the 4 1/2″ border. Fabric in the mockup is Folktale by Lella Boutique for Moda.
MATERIALS NEEDED for baby size 48″ x 48″:
- 4 fat quarters assorted prints
- 1 1/8 yards background fabric
- 3/4 yard border fabric
- 1/2 yard binding fabric
- 3 1/2 yards backing fabric
- 56″ x 56″ batting
Adjust cutting for the background fabric on the bottom of page 1:
- (16) background squares 5″ x 5″
- (4) background squares 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
- (32) background squares 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
To the border fabric, cut (5) strips. (Attach 2 strips to the sides. Attach 2.5 strips to the top and bottom.)
For a larger quilt 80″ x 80″: Make (16) blocks and set them 4×4. Skip the border (unless you want it even bigger). Fabric in the mockup is Smoke & Rust by Lella Boutique for Moda.
MATERIALS NEEDED: 80″ x 80″ (no border)
- 16 fat quarters assorted prints
- 3 3/4 yards background fabric
- *no border fabric
- 3/4 yards binding fabric
- 6 1/4 yards backing fabric
- 88″ x 88″ batting
Adjust cutting for the background fabric on the bottom of page 1:
- (64) background squares 5″ x 5″
- (16) background squares 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
- (128) background squares 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
Of course, you can make it even bigger by adding a border. A 4 1/2″-wide border would give a finished size of 88″ x 88″ (approx. queen-sized).
