Sunday is for WIPs: no. 2
I’ve had to skip a couple Sundays already, but I’m back today! I haven’t had a chance to work on the Concord overlapping rings quilt from a couple weeks back, but I did take a few minutes to piece a backing and send a finished quilt-top off to a long arm quilter!
The Project: Buffalo Plaid in Little Tree Fabric
This is a buffalo plaid quilt I’ve been working on a little bit the past few Christmases. After seeing Holly at Maker Valley make a bunch of cute buffalo plaid quilts, I was itching to make one! I didn’t follow any particular pattern – just laid out a bunch of 5″ squares and then “stretched out” the design into the border. It seems like there are already quite a few free tutorials for buffalo plaid quilts – but none with the border like mine (to my knowledge). Do you think it be worth sharing in a later post? I do want to make a few more quilts like these.
Fabric is Little Tree by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics (now out of print). Backing is Snuggle (minky) from Moda. Can’t wait to see how this one turns out after Marion Bott (my long arm quilter) gets her hands on it.
Have you ever made a buffalo plaid quilt? Let me know in the comments below.

February 5, 2023 at 7:53 amYes, I think it would be nice to see your pattern of the buffalo plaid with the “stretched out” design in the border. I’ve never made a buffalo plaid quilt but made a black, red and grey with Into the Woods fabric. It was done with squares and rectangles.

February 5, 2023 at 9:47 amI have never made a Buffalo plaid quilt (on my 2023 list) but have seen some very pretty ones from Lindsey Weight of Primerose Cottage Quilts. And I do like the idea of extended borders. Can’t wait to see yours when it comes back from the laq.

February 5, 2023 at 11:12 amThis inspires me to put it on my bucket list. This quilt pattern would be great for gifts to my great nephews and nieces. I can see it in shades of pink and aqua for the girls. Blue, reds and greens for the boys.

February 5, 2023 at 8:30 pmI have always been drawn to buffalo plaid quilts too. I like how you extended the design into the borders. If you shared the details in a blog post that would be great!

February 6, 2023 at 5:48 pmI made one with Primitive Gatherings flannel – red & cream houndstooth print, red and cream solids – Love how it turned out! I think it’s the simplicity of it that is so appealing.

February 8, 2023 at 2:34 amLove the buffalo plaid and your choice of fabrics is great, as well as, the wider border. What is the width of the border. A pattern would be great.
lellaboutique
February 13, 2023 at 3:26 pmThe border width is 9.5″ – I basically just doubled the width of what (2) blocks would have been.

February 13, 2023 at 4:31 amThe closest thing to a plaid quilt I have made is Corey Yoder’s Starry Gingham. I really like the stripe blocks in your version of Buffalo plaid. As always, your fabrics and patterns are beautiful!
