Pattern Tidbits

For the “Dishes” quilt, use the Creative Grids Circle Savvy Ruler, or use the paper template included in the pattern to trace your own templates onto template plastic or cardboard. (TIP: I collect and save the sturdy cardboard bases from Layer Cakes for templates like this.)

This pattern is a great intro to curved piecing! Here is an example of the technique used:

When sewing curved pieces together, you’ll notice right away that the curves don’t seem to match up – this is normal. To begin, mark a crease at the centerpoint of each curve. To do this, fold each unit in half diagonally and finger-press a crease at the fold to create a center mark along the curve.

To sew the curves together, bring the units right sides together with the outer unit on top – aligning and pinning at the center crease marks first. Next, align and pin at the ends, making sure raw edges match. Finally, fill in pins evenly along the curve between the ends and center, easing the fabric as needed so the edges stay aligned. Stitch along the curve using .” seam allowance and press the seams out.

Tada! Feels like magic! Keep in mind that for this pattern, each block has 2-3 curved seams. Don’t let this intimidate you – the technique stays exactly the same. Simply sew 1 outer curve to 1 inner curve at a time.
