Moda Blockheads 5: Group 2 (Block 7)

Hey sweethearts! Happy Valentines Day. It’s the perfect day to share a little love with the next free block pattern for the Moda Blockheads 5 Free Block of the Week. Say hello to “Star Bloom,” which is Block #7 from Group 2. I would love to make a whole quilt top full of these!

Moda Blockheads 5, group 2 block 7 "Star Bloom" by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique. Fabric is Old Glory by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics.

This block is made from Old Glory fabric – which is starting to show up in shops now. Be sure to ask about it at your favorite local or online shop. (You can check out all my other project ideas using the fabric HERE.)

Piecing the Block

When I designed this “Star Bloom” block last year, I mocked it up in Lovestruck fabric (also in shops right now). It’s so soft and sweet and gives it such a feminine look. The piecing for this block is much more straightforward than what you might guess at a glance. It’s composed of (8) snowball blocks (meaning each square has 4 “easy corners triangles” added to it) + a simple square in the center. My only real piecing trick to share is to press out the easy corners BEFORE trimming the 1/4″ seam allowance. The reason for this is the bottom square acts as a guide to press the easy corner print out to. Hope you have fun picking out prints and stitching this up!

My Moda Blockheads 5 Layout

Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to sew along this time around… but I still came up with a layout plan. Using my “New Leaf” quilt pattern as a guide, I plugged 6″ finished size blocks in place of the pattern’s sampler squares. I imagined a single-print version using a couple prints from my Harvest Road collection. (It’s out of print, but you get the idea and could duplicate it using your favorite solid or near-solid.) There are a few gaps since there are still a few more free block patterns yet to be revealed.

But don’t worry, you can check back in to my Moda Blockheads 5 post here where I will keep updating the block archive and layout. Thanks for stopping by!

What is yardage for the total blocks or yardage of each color needed?

I love all your fabrics. With the new line in red, white and blue it will be a very hard decision when picking fabrics. Thank you .
