Spring Fling: Magic Dot Cutting Tips

Here is the landing spot for those of you looking for a simplified cutting sheet when making the Spring Fling flower quilt in Magic Dot fabric. The original pattern separates the cutting instructions in three categories: flower centers, flower petals, and stems. In these Magic Dot versions, we are often use a print for multiple categories so I wanted to provide the cutting scenarios. Refer to the original Spring Fling cutting instruction for specific measurements.

Cutting Combinations

Flower Center + Flower Petal Combo (1 F8+ 1 FQ combined in 1/2 yard):

  • Cut (1) strip 6-1/2″ x WOF. Subcut (2) “A” squares. From the excess, subcut the (16) D squares.
  • Cut (1) strip 3-1/2″ x WOF. Subcut (8) “B” squares.
  • Cut (1) strip 2-1/2″ x WOF. Subcut (8) “C” squares.

Yields (2) flower centers and (2) flower petal sets. (I used this cutting for the “Coral,” “Raspberry,” “Pink Lemonade,” “Americana,” and “Goldie” colors. You can follow it for “Cloud” but will need to add an additional petal set.)

Flower Center + Flower Stem Combo (1 F8 + 1/2 yard combined in 5/8 yard):

  • Cut (2) strips 7” x WOF. Subcut (6) “E” squares (3 per strip). From the excess, cut (2) “A” squares and (4) “F” squares.
  • Cut (1) strip 3-1/2″ x WOF. Subcut (8) “F” squares. Combine with the others to get (12) “F” square total.

Yields (2) flower centers and (3) flower stem sets. (I used this cutting for “Flax” and “Sky.”)

Flower Center + Flower Petals + Flower Stem (1 F8 + 1 FQ + 1/2 yard combined in 7/8 yard):

  • Cut (2) strips 7″ x WOF. Subcut (6) “E” squares (3 per strip). From the excess, subcut (2) “A” squares.
  • Cut (2) strips 3-1/2″ x WOF. Subcut (8) “B” squares and (12) “F” squares.
  • Cut (1) strip 2-1/2″ x WOF. Subcut (8) “C” squares.
  • (1) strip 2″ x WOF. Subcut (16) “D” squares.

Yields (2) flower centers, (2) flower petal sets, and (3) flower stem sets. (I used this cutting for “Cotton Candy” and used the remnant for the binding.)

Hope this helps!
