Pattern Tidbits

This isn’t my first tree quilt, but “Pine Needles” is the first I’ve designed with lots of skinny little fabric strips. This is such a great scrapbuster project! Check out those scrappy little corners on each block, aren’t they cute? Even though I’ve kept the strips organized into color groupings, you could obviously mix colors together if you’d like. If you don’t like the scrappy mix of block backgrounds, you can always opt for a single-print instead. Let your creativity guide you.

Piecing tips for this one… the main recommendation is something that’s always good to keep in mind when sewing a bunch of strips together. Don’t sew all the strips of a block at one sitting and try to press them all at once. Instead, sew them together in pairs, press, sew the pairs together, press, etc. It takes a little more time and intention but will help keep the seams straight and less overall warping that can happen during pressing. After sewing the strips together, we make half-square triangles to get our cute scrappy tree blocks!

MATERIALS

The “Pine Needles” quilt is fat eighth friendly but of course you can gather up beloved scraps instead. I used an entire fat eighth bundle of Peppermint Cocoa plus (1) fat eighth of Magic Dot 5230 18 “Sage.” For the assorted backgrounds, I used the following: (2) FQs Magic Dot in #5230-84 “Marshmallow,” (4) FQs #5230-81 “Christmas Cream,” (4) FQs #5230-20 “Forest,” (3) FQs #5230-19 “Fern,” and (3) FQs #5230-64 “Robin’s Egg.” But here’s what the generic materials list looks like:

• (10) fat eighths of assorted green prints
• (8) fat eighths of assorted cream prints
• (8) fat eighths of assorted red prints
• (6) fat eighths of assorted brown prints
• (16) fat quarters of assorted background prints – or 3 1/4 yards of a single print
• 3/4 yard binding print (Magic Stripe #5231 64)
• 4 5/8 yards backing print
• 81” x 81″ batting
