Moda Blockheads 7: Block 1 “Spring Walk”
Hey! Looks like I’m kicking off Moda Blockheads 7 with Block #1: “Spring Walk.” Inspired by wandering garden paths and little blooms, this one combines simple patchwork flowers with strips of color for a block that feels happy and fresh. (Hope you love making this one!)
Of course, I had to piece one in Peppermint Cocoa fabric. (Does that make it a winter stroll?) 🙂
If you’re new to Moda Blockheads – this is a free block-of-the-week program that sort of resembles a choose-your-own-adventure quilt along. Choose from a few different block sizes (9″, 12″, 18″, or 24″), choose a layout (there will be ideas shared to help there), choose your prints, and choose which blocks to make. I always recommend checking out the Blockheads Facebook group for tons of inspiration. You can also check out Moda’s page HERE for lots of info, easy archive of block downloads, etc. Blocks are posted every Wednesday!
The Fabric
I’m going to try really hard to sew along this time! I’m planning on using my upcoming Peppermint Cocoa collection – arriving to shops May 2027. The color palette is similar to Berry & Pine so you could definitely get a similar look using that collection if you don’t want to wait. I think I’ll be using approximately a fat quarter bundle + a TON of the coordinating Magic Dot basics mixed in for backgrounds and accents, especially 5230 20 “Forest,” 5230 19 “Fern,” and 5230 83 “Scarlet.” I do also use some of 5230 34 “Pink Lemonade.”
The Layout
I’ll be making the 9″ block size – definitely a little more difficult because of the small pieces, but I’m up for the challenge! I’m making 25 blocks total – using 12 of the 30 total block designs. I’ll make each twice – plus a third one of Block #1 to get to 25. The reason I’m making 12 of the designs has to do with difficulty level at the 9″ size, as well as what ones will fit the Christmas theme best. Here is a little mockup of the (3) blocks I’m making this week in Peppermint Cocoa:
My layout will be a lattice-style of sashing which will involve a bit of strip piecing construction. I’ll have a free pattern available for that. All you need to know for materials is that you will need (21) assorted strips cut 2″ x WOF and 2 1/2 yards of the cream print. I’m cutting the assorted strips from yardage – but you could trim down leftover Jelly Roll strips or even adapt something like fat quarters or fat eighths. (In the case of fat quarters or fat eighths, you would cut a couple strips 2″ x 21″ per print and it will work great.) Here’s a peek of what that layout will look like – the large dark green squares are placeholders for the other sampler blocks. Watch me fill them in week by week! I’ve already placed the 3 blocks from this week:
