Disappearing 4-to-9 Patch Quilt

Pardon me but have you seen this Hello Luscious fabric by BasicGrey?! Talk about adorable! I was late to the party on getting yardage for this one but was able to snag a couple of charm packs (precut 5″ squares) for a baby quilt.

I used those pretty little 5″ squares to make a disappearing 4-to-9 patch quilt. (Lickety Split quilt pattern found in my book: Charm School – 18 Quilts from 5″ Squares.) A 4-to-9 patch is a fun spin on a basic block quilt. You sew squares together in sets of 4 (to make a 4-patch), the slice it up into pieces and sew it back together. I think you’ll agree it yields a pretty cool result.

Lickety Split uses intermediate skill level (a confident beginner might be able to tackle it). I made a few deviations from the Lickety Split pattern instructions. First, I replaced 1 white square per 4-patch with 1 yarn dyed flax square. When stitching the 4 squares into a 4-patch block, I arranged 1 white + 1 flax square side by side in the top row, and 2 assorted print squares together in the bottom row before performing, you know, the lickety-split cutting magic. And then I made fewer squares to fill up my quilt top since I wanted it to be baby quilt sized.

I did some free motion bloom quilting on my domestic machine, can you figure out my sewing path just by looking at it? I think it turned out pretty cute. And of course, I used Moda Snuggle for the backing.

I did learn a pretty cool thing about the Hello Luscious fabric collection as I was researching it for this post. Moda came out with a free jelly roll pattern to go along with the collection. It’s an oldie by now but I thought was worth sharing:
